Nail plate detaching from nail bed... my "shrinking nail." Help?

I have had this problem for 9 months now. My pinky nail is getting smaller and smaller. The actual nail is continuing to grow, but where it is attached to the nail bed keep receding. The pink part of my nail is now about 1/3 the size it used to be. The color on my nail [from bottom to top] goes from the natural pink that is in all my nails, to a strip of darker pink, to the white that is lifted above the nail bed. I have found that the strip of darker pink is usually where the nail plate is about to lift off and then it becomes the white part.

Not only is this really unattractive and looks funny, it also hurts. When I look up nail fungus online the pictures are much more grotesque and the nails are much more discolored than mine. In fact, for the most part mine looks like a pretty normal nail, but if you look under you can see the dried white flakes of dead skin that I am assuming was from when the nail plate detached from the nail bed.

I am really self-conscious about this and like I said it gets pretty painful every once in a while.

First, does anyone know how to stop it? Or else I wont have a nail!

Second, I would really like a full nail back on my finger. Is there any way to make it reattach??! Please let me know!

Sounds like a mild fungus that has gotten beneathe the nail and into the nail bed (did you ever wear acrylic nails?)

Anyhow, go to the drugstore and buy some white iodine. Apply it above and below the nail several times a day to see if it stops the symptoms. Obviously if this does not help, you should consult a dermatologist.
