Toenail and another toenail?

I don't have any nail fungus's. My toenails look perfectly normal (well my pinkie nails are a little flat, but you get the point). The other day I was trying to wrangle my three excited dogs out of the house and ended up slamming my foot in the door. I was wearing flip flops at the time so I really messed up my toes. Unlike normal people my second toe is the longest and not my big toe, so that nail actually got ripped completely off. All that was left was a little tab so I ripped it the rest of the way off and washed the bloody mess off with peroxide and alcohol. After I got the blood washed away I noticed there was another toenail underneath!?! It was softer and rather tender, but two days later it has hardened and is definitely a toenail. It only goes about half way up the toe but still? Is this normal?? Whats going on?
