Olive leaf extract [capsules] .....it is a known antifungal. Take as per instructed on the bottle. Do a little research on the subject. You could also take bee propolis with this as that also has some antifungal properties. Consider adding a little virgin coconut oil or the supplement caprylic acid [from coconut oil] to your daily regime also....another known antifungal.
Topical treatments may work if the infection is not too far advanced. There may be some anecdotal evidence for tea tree oil, vicks vapour rub or apple cider vinegar having some effect against toenail fungus yeasts when applied topically. But if the infection is advanced [all nails and/or of a long duration] you really need to tackle the infection systemically, though you could still apply a treatment topically at the same time. There are over the counter topical treatments also that are less messy than using those home "remedies". In the UK some of these are available on an NHS prescription.
Any systemic or topical treatment would need at least 6 months to see the full effect....i.e. when a completely new nail should be in place, i.e. since treatment began.
Laser treatment and surgical removal of toenails under a local anaesthetic may be a sure way to have healthy nails without having to wait many months for a treatment to kick in. But they are expensive no doubt....not sure if you could get either on health insurance [or the NHS in the UK] for instance.
The downside of Lamisil is that it may harm the liver...hence why you will have to have liver function tests [and maybe other tests] when on Lamisil. So yes it would be best to try olive leaf extract and other antifungal herbs and supplements first and you could try a topical treatment alongside this.
Best wishes.
