What type of nail fungus do I have?

Im 27 now but for as long as I can remember i've had some kind of fungus on my thumbs.

It makes my thumbnails yellow and cracky in the middle but there is no pain or anything.

I got some medicine from the dermitologist and it seems to be working but i am curious as to what my condition might be as he didnt know at the time of the exam.

When ever I apply the medicine or listerine, little black things rise towards the surface. Ive searcher the net but Im not sure what they are.

Please help

Answers:

Well the most likely answer is that you have Onychomycosis. This basically means you have a type of fungus - it can one of a number of different types of fungus like athlete's foot or candida, and it can even be aggravated by bacterial infection. It's very common, and something like one in ten people have it at some stage.

The only way for sure, to know exactly what fungus it is, is to send clippings off to a lab - but the majority of nail infections on the hand are caused by candida. It's very easy to catch - particularly if you often have wet hands.

It usually takes about 6 months for the nail to heal and it's important not to stop treatment too soon. And it's also important to make sure you dry your hands thoroughly after washing.

Use proper nail stuff - I wouldn't mess around with Listerine.
